The discrepancy is easily explained - I can't count (data columns, at least). The plot that had been displayed was of the
2m temperature vs the grid bottom temperature - I have now replaced it with a corrected version. Color me embarassed as I should have been suspicious since the plot scatter was less than I had expected from looking at the numbers - and I never thought to check the sign of the offset. Perhaps I can atone by providing an additional graph which compares the model error to daily temperature changes, i.e.to the change in temperature from the previous day, which might be viewed a comparison to the "persistence" prediction, at

Also, the mintopo height is within 3m of the model terrain and both are below the actual (ridge) observation height.
